Encore Outpatient Services offers both PHP and IOP services. But what do these mean? Only a careful assessment by a clinician can determine what treatment is required to best meet the needs of the client.
Our Partial Hospitalization Program
Partial hospitalization, or PHP, is the highest level of care available outside of inpatient or residential treatment. PHP treatment is designed for clients who need intense substance use disorder treatment, along with the flexibility and ability to return home in the evenings. PHP typically involves group therapy 5-6 hours a day, at least 5 days a week, along with individual sessions with a psychiatrist and individual therapist. While some clients may begin their treatment in PHP, PHP can also serve as a step-down level of care after residential treatment. Clients in the Partial Hospitalization Program are at a point in their treatment where they no longer require 24-hour nursing care or daily medical visits and can begin to work on their reintegration into the community. Once clients have stabilized enough in PHP, they may transfer to an intensive outpatient program (IOP).
Our Intensive Outpatient Program
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) give clients a little more flexibility than PHP. It consists of regular group therapy sessions, typically 3 hours long and meeting at least 3 times per week, as well as working with individual providers. IOP allows clients more freedom to also go to school or work while receiving treatment. Additionally, it may be easier for clients that have children that require childcare and/or a partner who also works full-time.
An IOP also gives clients the opportunity to practice coping skills in their home environment, while maintaining the support of intensive treatment. Putting their newly acquired coping skills into practice outside of the therapy environment helps them strengthen these techniques and incorporate them into their daily life.
A full course of both PHP and IOP treatment can range from 4 months to a year. Clients may choose to then stay in GOP or General Outpatient, which consists of individual therapy and/or group therapy. It is generally recommended that all clients step down slowly from wherever they begin treatment to allow them to ease into their lives while integrating the coping skills they are learning.
